July 29th, 2004, unloaded my backpack in this room overlooking the Black
Sea for a 2 week camp on the environment at the Military Sanatorium in
Sudak.
|
I couldn't resist going down to the beach early the next morning to get a
look before it got hot, hot, hot. This is 6:30 looking east. You can see
swimmers far out. Sunbathers are already lying or standing to get the tan
and air baths that Russians and Ukrainians so love.
|
|
Now a shot looking West towards the 10th century fortress. More about that
later. Within an hour there will not be a space left on the entirety of
this beach as literally hundreds and hundreds of tourists are on their way
here. Before the day is over thousands will have spent some time on these
beaches.
|
Here a street cleaner sweeps up debris left by last night's crowds. The
contrast of her and the bikini-clad, navel pierced tourist in her high
heels was striking.

|
Sudak's beach front is a combination Atlantic City, New Orleans, mélange
with discos, cafes, souvenir shops, carnival rides that go most of the
night.
|
As most of you know the camp was not well organized and the only group of
kids that I had some success with were these 8-10 year olds from Moscow.
Here they confront the spider web.

Here, a middle school group plans out "River Crossing with Katya
their teacher looking on.
|
Thank goodness for the beautiful view from our balcony. I truly loved
watching the sea and at night the moon.
