Musings of an Ukraine Traveler

Farewell to Sudak; Hello to Yalta

At the end of the first week, a gigantic thunderstorm pummeled all of Ukraine including the Crimea. This yacht anchored in my view and looked so peaceful.

Claudia Maldanado, Amitabh Sheth and Steven Senenntedy came on Sunday to celebrate Steven's birthday. Steven swam in the sea while the rest of us watched.

I left camp early and headed for Yalta with Claudia who hosted me for a couple of days. Here is the magnificently restored St. Vladymir's Cathedral.

It rained nearly everyday in Yalta, but Claudia and I enjoyed visited many historic places like Lavadia Palace, built by Polish Count Potosky, summer retreat and home of the Romanovs after driving the Poles out of Ukraine. In 1945, Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin met here to divide up the world in the Yalta conference. I am standing in the the park in front of an umbrella pine looking out to the sea. I have a fine collection of professional photos of the palace itself that I will share with you later.

Yalta, founded originally by the Greeks, is built on the Crimean Mountains which front the sea. This is a view from Claudia's flat. Mimosa trees grow everywhere.

The beach front and walk of Yalta have been beautifully restored. There were many tourists, but not like Sudak. Of course it costs more to stay here so fewer children and students.

It is thought that Jason and the Argonauts began their journey seeking the Golden Fleece from this coast. Here you can see in silhouette a restaurant called the Argus.

Every Ukrainian City has its Lenin statue and Yalta is no different. Notice my farmer tan, but better yet look at the magnificent calla lilies behind me.
