Musings of an Ukraine Traveler

Holidays 2004: Christmas

We were in Vinnytsia again for American Christmas, but had the good fortune to participate in the New Year party with Alice's center for special children. It is the Ukrainian custom to dress up in costume for New Year, their holiday for giving presents, etc.

Baba Yaga, rather like a Christmas witch who always accompanies Snow Princess and Father Frost  who brings the children their New Years gifts. She is sometimes good, sometimes bad character who likes to play tricks and tell jokes.

PCVs learn to make all kinds of adaptations to life in Ukraine. For Alice it is propping her oven door shut with a mop handle. Here she shows Wini the correct way to do it.

Alice always sets a beautiful table and on Christmas Eve we made our toasts with Armenian cognac poured from a glass sword! It went down easy and by Sunday night we had finished the sword.

Although others were expected only Jeff Janis made it to Christmas dinner. Jeff was the "rose among the thorns." He took a lot off of three Tak Girls.

The yoelka went up in the Korostyshiv plaza on December 25th and stayed up until the end of the season on January 14, Old New Year.
