This bridge spanning the Tagus is
Lisbon's Golden Gate for the many blue collar workers who make their
home on the other side. Claudia gives Ken a hug or is
holding on. The wind was awfully strong. On this day we were touring the
docks area which is the center of nightlife for young Lisboas with
restaurants, discos and shops.

The Tower of Belem built by the Marques
de Pombal to commemorate the rebirth of Lisbon. Built in the 16th century
in the Manueline style. UNESCO World Heritage building. To the right of
the tower the Tagus flows into the Atlantic Ocean.

Discoveries Monument built in 1960 to
commemorate the 500th anniversary of Prince Henry the Navigator, promoter of
the discoveries.

Vasco de Gama stands on the prow of
the monument and on both sides, each of the many Portugese explorers who
sailed to Brazil, India, Africa and the South Seas is lined up behind
him on both sides.

I wish I knew what symbol went with
what explorer, but I don't, but the sculptor created living portraits
with his detail.

Even in modern times, the Portugese
continued to explore and dare. It was a Portugese aviator who was the
first to fly across the Anartic.
