Musings of an Ukraine Traveler

Chersonesus of Tauris

Revisiting the ruins of this ancient city was especially fulfilling for me as this day was bright with sunshine the waves white, the sea the deepest blue. This time I got to see the theater which still hosts Greek plays. For other pictures from the first trip click here.

We ended our time in Sevastopol strolling the embankment and viewing the many monuments including this one to the Scuttled Ships with a Russian seaman standing thoughtfully in front. During the Crimean War, the Russian admirals decided to prevent the English and French from taking the harbor by sinking their ships in the entrance and moving fortifications. It was a heroic choice, but did not stop the Allies.
