Musings of an Ukraine Traveler

People of India--Getting Around

Whether on the highway or in town, riding in traffic in India is a harrowing experience. Yes we are on the left. The two mortorcycles in front of us just moved to the far left to pass. Trucks, buses, taxis, cycles, etc

On our left going the opposite way on the highway a herd of cattle and water buffalo.

This is a small herd compared to the large ones of sheep and/or goats that we often shared the road with.

Kelly took this picture from the van window. This is how close were our encounters with animals, people and all other modes of transport. Rajasthanis paint their animals in their colors--pink and blue

Early morning and the autotaxi drivers are cleaning their machines. These are 3-wheeled vehicles with a small motor under the driver's seat. They are different colors and decorated differently depending on the city and are always crammed packed.

Trucks and cycles make up the bulk of traffic. Here a sari clad woman rides side saddle. I have seen as many as 5 people on one of these. Of course some of those are children. In some cities the drivers are required to wear helmets, but not the passengers.

Bicycle rickshaws carry heaps of goods and people. It seemed like every driver was extremely thin and had bands of steel for legs.

This camel is resting his head in the fork of the tree. Camels are used for pulling carts and carrying goods or people.

There aren't many buses, but drivers fill up the top too.
