Musings of an Ukraine Traveler

Korostyshiv the Town

The autobus station is busy all day carrying people from the city to the villages. It is only a 5 minute walk from my apartment. I can go anywhere in Ukraine on one of these buses.

This lady and others sell pirogs (bread baked with meat or fruit inside) at the station to incoming or outgoing passengers. Korostyshiv pirogs are famous throughout Ukraine.

School number 2. There are 5 schools in the city. Students in forms 1-11 are enrolled at each school. Starting this year schools will adopt a 12 year program, instead of 11.  Before 1991, schools were forbidden to teach Ukrainian. Now it is the law.

The fire station. Most fire stations in Ukraine have these towers. My guess is they served the same purpose as look out towers in the US forests especially during the war during bombing raids.

This restaurant on the end of the hill is very nice and one of the more modern ones in town. The umbrellas are advertising Obalon, a Ukrainian beer.

The sanatorium used to have mineral baths and was quite a popular resort. Now it is a place mostly for children especially those that live in the Chernobyl area. The state provides that each child living in the affected areas spend 24 days of stay at sanatoriums where they exercise, receive thorough medical and dental exams and treatment. There are dorms, large cafeteria and a forest nearby.
