Musings of an Ukraine Traveler

LEAP

Local Environmental Action Program

I am a volunteer environmental facilitator for a non-governmental organization (NGO). LEAP is a program out of Vermont and is part of the International Sustainable Communities Program. It is partially sponsored by USAid. There are 7 pilot sites in Ukraine and Korostyshiv is one of them.

The LEAP office is located in the Hotel Cvitok. There is a small cafe named "Tete-a-Tete" on the left where the sign is. The top floor are rooms. The bottom floor is rented out as office space.

Our office is located on the first floor, second window to the left. It's small but, sufficient for a two person staff. Look closely at the windows and you will see a typical Ukrainian window. The big window has a small square window on top. Very nice for letting in a little air without opening the entire casement. The city lets us have the space rent free. There are 7 other city offices in this building. The mayor's office is about 6 blocks north of us.

Zhanna, my counterpart talks with a friend while Tamara, biology teacher and facilitator of the Ecology Circle works on the environmental action plan.

Alexi, one of the local teens is constructing a web site for the office. Like all teens, he listens to his favorite music while working.

The work of LEAP is all determined during seminars like this 2-day one in June where people of all ages and from different professions did a SWOT analysis of the major concerns of the community.

Yulia, Zhanna's sister, stands in front of a well that has been completely refurbished through LEAP and volunteers last year. This water is pure and lead free. The old well was surrounded by growth, garbage and litter. The walls of the well were crumbling and it was difficult to get water out. Not only are their stairs, but the water is protected by the granite walls and comes through a stainless steel pipe.
