Musings of an Ukraine Traveler

Myrhorad: Resort City in the East

The electrichka, fast train, brought 12 PCVs to Myrhorad, home of the great author, Gogol on September 26, 2003.

Here at one of the 3 sanatoria Jill Trued, (a Ukrainian woman who stepped into the picture when we wanted her to take it), me, Wini Kissick, Linda Wylie, Holly McDaniel, Anne Silver, Wendy Maxwell, Gail Huschle, Kathryn Provenzano, Gina Farnelli and Laura Conaway and Jean Zachariasiewicz (not in picture) gathered to rejuvenate ourselves and to plan how we might support and teach other PCVs in our regions how to do the same.

Located on the Horop River, Myrhorad has two antiaircraft towers guarding the river. Ivy is slowly creeping up these 60 year old defenses and a gun barrel still stands ready in one of the windows.

The grounds are striking in their colorful flower beds, trees and creatively designed buildings. Wini was delighted.

The use of tile to create art on public buildings is a direct result of the Byzantine art so prevalent in historic Ukraine

Wonderful ceramics adorned many walls in the sanatoria, but my favorite was this on the outside wall of the theater depicting Ukrainian dress and music.
