Musings of an Ukraine Traveler

Park on the River

Korostyshiv boasts a large park of mixed forests that runs along both sides of the Teteriv River. In the 60's and 70's, this park along with the mineral springs of the sanatorium was the place to come for rest, for getting in touch with nature and for fishing. Besides the features shown below, the park boasted playground equipment, benches along all the paths and a full sized basketball court and football (soccer) field. All that is changed now. Pollution from granite factories, from littering and illegal dumping are slowly killing the river. Vandals destroyed nearly all the benches; the playground equipment rusts in the river and the courts are overgrown. But if Zhanna Nikolya Chamut, the director of LEAP,  has her way, this park and river will again serve as the place to go to breathe fresh air; swim and fish in the cool water for the community of Korostyshiv and for all those wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city.

This spot where the river pours over a dam is a favorite spot for fisherman. There are always at least 10-20 persons fishing this spot.

The benches and the amphitheater have been refurbished through the efforts of our LEAP office in cooperation with the city administration.

This bandstand and dance floor are fenced off and a guard dog watches to keep vandals at bay. The small lake fed by a natural spring is right behind me. It is a green cesspool filled with algae and trash. I look forward to seeing this become alive again.

These stand up tables look out on the river. I tried not to get too much of the litter. Another dream to have it all refurbished.

My counterpart, Zhanna, standing on a cliff overlooking the Teteriv in April when it is clear and blue. The city is on both sides of the river.
