Walk Through the Town: Down Karla Marx Road

This is one of my favorite pictures. Cats here appear healthy and very content sunning themselves in front of  the block on the benches.

I see a lot of this in town--a sign of prosperity and an ecological mantra, "reduce, reuse, recycle." Home to 400 granite companies, the region has lots of small granite waste stones. Homeowners all over town are building new fences for their homes. I watch them spend hours after work and on weekends in hard physical labor sprucing up thier homes and yards.

Here is an example of a finished wall. Nearly all have some kind of wood sections. Some even use the older wooden fences that they have taken down. All the metal gates are painted. I've determined that color of paint depends on what is being sold in bazaar. Blue was very popular this year.

This house is a duplex. Notice that the left side has not been redone. The right side has been newly plastered (over brick), painted including windows and has a new fence. All roofs here are corrugated steel and pretty sharply sloped. We Idahoans know what that is for--snowwwww!

Norma, a new cafe and magazine (convenience store) has a colored hard plastic roof like those found in the states. Might mention that nearly all the plasterers and painters here are women.

A lot of stores in town are refurbishing. Here you can see the old bricks being covered by brown plaster and new windows being put in. See the next page to see what happens to a building like this.
