Musings of an Ukraine Traveler

Why I Did It!

I don't wonder how I got to this point of leaving home and adventuring to unknown territory, but many of my friends, family and colleagues definitely do wonder. Even the doctor who performed all the medical tests had to write, "No, except she's over 60" three times when asked if he knew of anything that might prevent my fulfilling Peace Corps assignments.

It all began about three years ago in our writing group, "Write Path for Professionals." when Sue Reuling Furness, challenged us in the first session to write it down and make it happen. Joining the Peace Corps was only one of the  life goals that I wrote down that morning without any real serious consideration. In November of 2001, still reeling like everyone from 9-11, wanting to do something, I followed up an ad for joining Peace Corps and began the online application. That simple act has impacted my life for over a year and a half.

Beauty, my 16-year old cat likes to think napping on my bags will keep me home.

Preparation

Preparation for a 27 month commitment entails many things. Most importantly it means thinking carefully about what you really really need and getting it down to less than 102 pounds. Clothes must be durable, washable (by hand) and dark as the water in Ukraine stains. I have hired a person as a caretaker for my house and pets, cajoled friends into mailing important correspondence and watching out for my financial affairs. I even sold my faithful Honda wagon!

I have made farewell visits to friends and family in Texas, Oklahoma, Oregon and Washington. Their emotional and financial support have been invaluable. My youngest sister gave me the largest pack of double A batteries I have ever seen. Now I am as ready as I shall ever be and leave for Chicago for our staging March 1st.
