Project: Restoration
March 9, 2003: A Slight Detour

Well, the weather turned rainy, so rather than lie on my back in a puddle of water under the bed, I parked in the garage and started cleaning out the engine compartment. Over there on the left is how things ended when I stopped. Here's how things started:
I used a naptha based solvent and a putty knife to remove the baked-on grease. If you use something like this, remember...naptha is one of the most flammable substances on the face of the planet. BE CAREFUL! |

Another view of the cleaning. Fortunately, most of the rust was really just rust stains. The rust that was real came off with some Krud Kutter rust remover.
There's still a fair amount of cleaning to do, though. One can of grease remover just wasn't enough for the job. Maybe next week... |

Again, a little engine compartment before and after. These are the brake and clutch master cylinders.
Look at the rust! The tops of both master cylinders are also covered with grease. The chunk of baling wire was Grandpa's fix-it job to keep the parking brake cable housing from melting on the cylinder head. So that's it for this weekend. Maybe next weekend will be nicer...but knowing spring in Idaho, I won't count on it! |
